Mahama ‘begged’ me to fund his political campaign – Chairman Wontumi

Ashanti Regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has revealed that former president John Mahama literally begged him to join the then ruling party National Democratic Congress (NDC) in order to fund his political campaign.

He made the shocking revelation in his hotly anticipated interview with Paul Adom Otchere Thursday night on Good Evening Ghana on Metro Television.

According to the controversial politician, Mahama made the plea for him to fund his political campaign after he had a meeting with the former president in Tamale.

He claims John Mahama wanted him to defect to the NDC and helped him because he was “extremely rich” and “intelligent”.

“He told me that, young man, you are too intelligent I want you to come to NDC to support me [President Mahama]. I will never lie about this, Wontumi will never lie and he [Mahama] knows,” he said.

Chairman Wontumi added that “It’s normal to tell a rich businessman to help you fund your campaign” however he declined the invitation because politics to him, is like a religion and he will never change his identity.

“So I was bold enough to tell him [Mahama] no, because at that time i had money so I was ballsy… I see politics as a religion. Where I come from, even if you have money and power and you don’t belong to NPP it’s very dangerous,” he said.
