Two days ago, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was announced as the running mate of former president John Dramani Mahama for the 2020 presidential elections.
Her nomination received largely positive reactions from critics and social media commentators who applauded John Mahama for choosing a woman as his running mate. Many lauded the choice as a bold attempt by the NDC to bridge the wide gender gap in the country.
While a lot is known about Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s public service and intimidating academic credentials, very little is known about her personal life.
Born on November 22, 1951, Naana, as she is affectionately called, hails from Komeda in the Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem (K.E.E.A) Municipal District of the Central Region.
Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is a divorcee with three adult children; Kweku Opoku-Agyemang, Kwabena Opoku-Agyemang, and Adwoa Opoku-Agyemang.
The eldest, Kweku has a PhD in Economics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison; Kwabena who is quite outspoken on social media and husband to feminist group PepperDemMinistries founding member Ama Opoku-Agyemang, has a PhD in English Literature from the West Virginia university. Her last born, Adwoa has a PhD in comparative literature from the University of Toronto.
