Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has attacked former president and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2020 polls, John Mahama for recent ethnocentric statements attributed to him.
Mahama, about a week ago shared a post on Facebook originally written by member of parliament for Bolgatanga Central Isaac Adongo, that tags Akyems as sakawa people.
The former president has been widely condemned for his ethnocentric comments by many, including President Akufo-Addo, who complained bitterly about his predecessor’s conduct to the members of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference on Friday.
Adding his voice to his boss comments, Vice President Bawuma told the people of Gushiegu in the Northern Region on Sunday that Mahama must apologise for the comments.
According to Bawumia, the former president is using tribalism as a tool because he is simply incompetent.
“How do you take a whole tribe and say they are Sakawa? How do you do that? And my message to John Mahama is that you cannot win this presidency with tribalism. Ghana has gone beyond tribalism,” he said.
“We want a president who will unite us and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has demonstrated that he is that person by what he has done not only in Dagbon but in other places.
“Come and show your competence in the delivery for the people of Ghana. But because you could not show your competence, you are resorting to tribalism. We will not stand for tribalism. Nana Akufo-Addo, yes he is an Akyem man but he is a Ghanaian. Akyem people are proud Ghanaians as other tribes.”
